The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Up Close and Personal

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Up Close and Personal

Looks like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch has gone mainstream. Though I don’t watch Oprah, apparently her guest today was Fabien Cousteau, grandson of legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. Appropriately for Earth Day, the main topic of conversation was the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which I’ve covered here. They cover the basics, it’s the world’s largest garbage dump, twice the size of Texas floating in the Pacific Ocean. 90% of the debris is plastic and a lot of that is plastic beverage bottles and their caps. How much will Oprah’s coverage of this raise awareness of the issue? The so-called Oprah Effect, the effect on book sales when she supports a title is legendary. Let’s hope this works on cutting down a bit on sales water and other beverages in plastic bottles.
